The new album, OLD FREIGHT

"What seems like a simple formula: acoustic guitar picking, sincere vocals, thoughtful lyrics and professional production is in fact nearly impossible.  So when someone does it right and in this case for his debut record it’s a moment to celebrate." Songs:Illinois

New video from SERFA

A few weeks ago at the Southeast Regional Folk Alliance Conference (SERFA) I had the pleasure to take this video with JB Nuttle, a videographer and head of World One Video. This video is part of the In The Moment series, which JB started a few years ago to capture high quality live performance videos in real time.

JB says: "I started going up to talent that I thought was outstanding and ask them to do one song, in one take, using one camera. From the begining, there has been no charge to the artist to record and with the cooperation of the Folk Alliance community that tradition continues. Thank goodness that NERFA, SERFA, and sometimes FAI support this idea. To boost the quality of the videos I knew I needed to change over an ‘invitation’ form instead of ‘anybody can record’.  It is now by invitation."

IBMA Songwriter Showcase

I am honored to have my song I Heart Mountains selected for the Songwriter Showcase at the 2018 IBMA World of Bluegrass festival. The Songwriter Showcase "puts the selected writers in front of dozens of artists, producers, and labels who attend looking for new material. The participants are chosen in a competitive process with only ten making the final cut." I watched the showcase in 2017 and it is indeed a fantastic part of the festival.

The showcase will happen on Thursday, September 27 at 1pm in the Raleigh Convention Center. Learn more about the Songwriter Showcase from Bluegrass Today.

SERFA showcase artists playlist

A new playlist is out on Noisetrade featuring one track from each of the 2018 SERFA showcase artists. (SERFA is the Southeast Regional Folk Alliance Conference). My song Old Freight is included - you can check out the playlist here:

I'll be featured in one official showcase and three "guerrilla" showcases this year at SERFA. You can find my showcase schedule below and also on my shows page.

Opening for Robbie Fulks, May 24 at Motorco

I am excited to open up for Robbie Folks at Motorco Music Hall (Durham, NC) on Thursday, May 24! Robbie Fulks is a top notch songwriter and one hell of a guitar picker. His most recent release, 2017’s Upland Stories, earned year’s-best recognition from NPR and Rolling Stone among many others, as well as two Grammy nominations, for folk album and American roots song (“Alabama At Night”). My personal favorite off the release is the track "Fare Thee Well, Carolina Gals", with references to local favorites like Franklin Street in Chapel Hill and Northgate Mall in Durham.
